How to Test Your Internet Speed
A complete guide to accurately measuring your internet connection speed and understanding the results.
Recommended Speed Test Tools
fast.com
Powered by Netflix. Best for measuring real streaming download speed.
speedtest.net
By Ookla. Most popular. Tests download, upload, and ping with server selection.
speed.cloudflare.com
By Cloudflare. Measures latency and jitter in addition to speed.
Step-by-Step: How to Get Accurate Results
- Use a wired connection. Plug an Ethernet cable directly from your router to your computer. WiFi introduces variability that can reduce measured speeds by 30-60%.
- Close all other apps and tabs. Background processes — cloud sync, Windows Update, streaming — all consume bandwidth and lower your test results.
- Test at different times. Network congestion during peak hours (evenings, weekends) reduces speeds. Test at multiple times to see your true range.
- Run multiple tests. Take 3-5 measurements and use the average. Single tests can be skewed by momentary network conditions.
- Test on a computer, not your phone. Phone processors and WiFi chips can limit results. Use a modern laptop or desktop for the most accurate reading.
Understanding Speed Test Results
Download Speed
How fast data comes from the internet to your device. This affects streaming, browsing, and downloads. Most plans advertise this number.
Upload Speed
How fast your device can send data to the internet. Important for video calls, cloud backups, and live streaming.
Ping (Latency)
Round-trip time in milliseconds for a small packet to reach the test server and return. Lower is better. Under 20ms is excellent; over 100ms causes noticeable delays in gaming and video calls.
Jitter
Variation in latency over time. High jitter causes choppy video calls and stuttering in online games even when average ping is low.
Why Your Speed May Be Lower Than Advertised
- WiFi signal strength and interference
- Older network equipment (router, modem, cables)
- Network congestion from neighbors sharing the same node
- ISP throttling during peak hours
- Distance from the ISP's local node
Minimum Speed Requirements
| Activity | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| SD video streaming | 3 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| HD video streaming | 5 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 4K video streaming | 25 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| Video calls (HD) | 2.5 Mbps up/down | 10 Mbps up/down |
| Online gaming | 3 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| Working from home | 10 Mbps | 50+ Mbps |
